Applications are being accepted for the New College Institute’s 2015 summer internship program.

Funded by the New College Foundation, the Harvest Foundation and local employers, the internship program provides students with a paid, hands-on work experience and demonstrates potential career opportunities available in Henry County and Martinsville, according to an NCI news release. For local employers, the program provides an opportunity to recruit and “test drive” talent with a low-cost investment, the release said.

“In addition to their work experience, students benefit from the internship program through civic engagement and professional development that help to increase their marketability for employment following graduation,” said Katie Croft, coordinator of experiential learning at NCI.

NCI has created a new online application available at Using the online portal application, students can create an account and view a list of prospective employers interested in hosting summer interns. Not all employers have created an account yet, so students are encouraged to check back periodically for updated employer accounts, the release said.

Just as in years past, students may apply with any employer in Henry County/Martinsville and the surrounding communities, not just those employers listed on the online portal.

Employers and students must submit a joint application by Feb. 6. Full instructions are available on the website.

About 50 interns will be chosen by a panel of community partners, the release said. They will earn up to $4,000 during their summer internships and will work 320 hours at a rate of $12.50 an hour between May and August. Employers must invest $1,000 of the total amount toward the wages of a first-time intern and $2,000 if the participant is a returning intern.

Through NCI’s partnership with the Virginia Space Grant Consortium, interested students also may create an account on the Commonwealth STEM Industry Internship Program (CSIIP) website. A CSIIP account will give students access to a statewide pool of employers seeking internships. If selected for an internship, students and employers will have access to professional development webinars provided by CSIIP and will receive a certificate of participation from the governor of Virginia.

Interested students and employers should attend an information session from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, at NCI. Information will be provided about the program and the application process.
