To Bear Witness: Penetrating the Silence

In July, organizations across the country will take part in Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month.

Named in honor of Bebe Moore Campbell, an accomplished author, activist, and NAMI Urban Los Angeles co-founder, July is the designated month to focus on building awareness around mental health challenges along with engaging strategies to inform the public about available resources.

To celebrate Minority Mental Health Month, Piedmont Community Services, along with New College Institute is hosting its first Minority Mental Health & Wellness Community Seminar with #tobearwitness, a campaign created by k. Neycha Herford, a Martinsville native who is a transformation expert and life empowerment coach in New York City.

The free event, designed to engage both health care professionals and those in the community at large impacted by depression, hopelessness and other mental health challenges, will be held on Thursday, July 27, from 6:00pm to 8pm at NCI’s Martin-Lacy Lecture Hall.

The program will highlight everyday mental health issues in communities of color, provide resources targeted towards diverse populations, and help empower everyone to be an “active witness” and supporter rather than spectator to those suffering with mental health crises.

Following Ms. Herford’s talk, special guests from the Mental health field, local community organizations, individuals and families impacted by mental illness will participate in the discussions of the evening to inspire hope.

Additionally, the event will activate Ms. Herford’s #tobearwitness anti-stigma campaign urging individuals to commit to listen without judgment to someone struggling with mental health

challenges like circumstantial depression as a result of loss, addiction, poverty, domestic violence, etc.

Don’t sit out. Advocate with us in July!
