2012 NEW COLLEGE INSTITUTE SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
LINKING TODAY’S EMPLOYERS WITH TOMORROW’S WORKFORCE
Through funding from the New College Foundation, the Harvest Foundation and local employers, the New College Institute (NCI) Summer Internship Program provides paid summer internship opportunities for students who are currently enrolled or accepted in college to gain practical experience by working full-time jobs in Martinsville, Henry County and Patrick County.
The Harvest Foundation and NCI are very interested in the development of the next-generation of educated young leaders for Martinsville / Henry County. The NCI Summer Internship Program link many young working professionals to the community and help to contribute towards the development of a world class workforce in Martinsville / Henry County.
The NCI Summer Internship Program, now in its 6th year, has a total of 32 interns; the most students New College Foundation and the Harvest Foundation has ever funded to participate within this program. In addition to the program increasing its amount of interns, this year also marks the first time NCI has had a non-local student participate in the program as an intern; this year a Virginia State University student from New York.
Some of the requirements for interns to successfully complete this internship experience include fulfilling 320 work hours with their employers (2012 interns and employers listed below), serving 15 hours of voluntary service learning throughout the community, and attending planned social networking and professional development activities. Various activities throughout the 2012 internship season include a tour of Uptown Martinsville with the Martinsville / Henry County Economic Development Corporation’s Division of Tourism, a panel discussion at the Martinsville / Henry County Historical Courthouse featuring a group of experienced professionals from the community, a regional event taking place at the Virginia Museum of Natural History focusing on the development an intergenerational workforce and emerging issues in the workforce, and a luncheon for the employers and the interns to celebrate the end of the season.
