The Licensure/Endorsement/M.Ed. programs in special education are offered in partnership with the U.Va. Curry School of Education, and are designed to meet the rapidly expanding need for well-trained special education teachers.  The licensure program is designed to prepare those without teaching experience, career changers, persons with provisional licenses, and general education teachers to teach students with mild disabilities.
The Master of Education with an emphasis in Special Education is designed for teachers who are professionally licensed and want further training in the field of special education. Three additional courses and comprehensive exams complete the requirements for the M.Ed. in special education.





Prerequisites include:

  • Earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university (concentration does not matter)
  • Hold a five-year renewable license OR
  • Submit passing PRAXIS I scores OR
  • Submit copies of SAT scores
    • Before April 1995, combined 1000, with at least 450 verbal and 510 math
    • After April 1995, combined 1100, with at least 530 each verbal and math
  • GREs must be completed and submitted with your application by July 1, 2010

*If you are not already licensed, you must either have taken a child development course in your postsecondary career, or take one through a community college before submitting your licensure paperwork to the state in January 2013.
