Description  

Secondary School Teachers endorsed in another science will meet requirements for the VA Earth Science Endorsement by completing the five-course series.  

Middle School Teachers can use one or more of the courses to add a middle school science concentration.

All teachers can enhance their science background and learn creative hands-on teaching strategies by enrolling in one or more of the courses.

The Courses:

  • Focus specifically on the SOLs for Grades 5, 6, and 9 .
  • Enhance teaching and learning in science, at all grade levels.
  • Are approved to be used in RU’s Master of Science in Education, Content Area Studies Concentration in Earth Science.
  • Courses will be taught in Martinsville at the VA Museum of Natural History and at the New College Institute. 
  • Course content will focus on “hands-on” learning, labs, and field trips.
  • Course evaluation will emphasize projects applicable to the classroom.
  • Courses will be scheduled to accommodate teachers’ busy lives.
  • Courses will be taught by doctorally prepared instructors, primarily professional geologists on staff at Virginia Museum of Natural History.
